  1. These are sooo helpful! Your whole blog is. I just had a very positive compartment syndrome test yesterday - all four quadrants of both legs after suffering like mad for 4 months. I have been in therapy for shin splints (started walking at the gym on a treadmill to get in shape - was fine for a few months then I stepped it up - dear Lord). Never knew such pain existed. And mine didn't let up. My pressures are high at rest as well. I made an appt with a surgeon (can't get in for a couple of weeks) so we will go from there. Thank you so much for sharing your story. Good luck to you!!!!!

  2. Dawn, thank you so much for providing this invaluable information about the whole experience of compartment syndrome. I was engaged in repetitive muscle building movements with my legs using the Isokinator (a German exercise device) for several months and now I have more or less constant pain in my legs. I'm going for an MRI next week. Hopefully it will show that I've got other injuries - ligament and tendon ones - instead of compartment syndrome.

After reading your blog, I feel better about having surgery if I am finally diagnosed with CECS. Thanks a million!

  4. Thank u! I am one week post op after 4 compartment fasciotomy. Is there any way you can provide me your experience with recovery? I am pretty swollen and still have quite a bit of pain. Also I have numbness in my shins. Any info would help! Thanks

    1. I'm a day shy of two weeks post op. still lots of swelling and pain but it's mostly skin stuff - not muscles - how are you progressing at month 4?

  5. Thank you for the pictures and information! I had my pressure test today and my surgery will be on Monday. I have just the lateral exterior compartment problems. But you story seemed all too familiar. For me, running wasn't the worst, it's roller skating, and because of that it took like 10 minutes on the treadmill, but I got high enough for the doc to approve the surgery. I'm nervous, but I have literally lived with this problem for 20 years, it's just been significantly worse since I started roller derby. But there's no way I want to give it up! So surgery wasn't that scary of a prospect if I could exercise pain free for the first time in my adult life!

    1. How did the surgery go? I've been doing roller derby and having problems for just over a year now. Sports therapist has suggested this this might be the problem and written a letter for my GP but really hoping it's not..

  6. Would your guys symptoms be pain in leg, numbness, tingling etc as if little bugs were moving around constantly? My legs feel heavy all the time and I'm not on them often enough! I recently just found a lump by the soleus muscle! I'm asking bc I has my gallbladder out 2 years ago and ever since those air compressor stockings, I've had these symptoms(minus the new lump)! I go into see specialist 2maro!

  8. I was finally just diagnosed with cecs back in September after years of on and off again pain, having no idea what was causing it. I just had my pre surgery appointment the other day but still have time to decide if is really what I want to do. I`m not afraid to have it I`m more so afraid of the risks, have you guys for the most part had a successful outcome with surgery?

  9. HI Dawn, thank you so much for your blog. It has been difficult to find information on this condition and the surgery. I've been dealing with same condition for 5 plus years. I recently had a compartment pressure test performed by an orthopedic specialist. My surgery is scheduled Sept 3 to release all 4 compartments in both legs. I'm curious to your status today and how your recovery has come along in the past few years. Thanks!

  10. Hi Renee, I hope your surgery was successful and you are recovering without issue.

My ski trip last winter was frustrating as I continued to have pain in my calves. I hope that it was because my calves were not exercised well enough before the trip. The fact that they hurt at all scared me. Again, I'm putting off going to see an orthopedic surgeon, but I believe I have developed a post fasciotomy hernia in both legs. I'm beginning to ramp up my exercise and training for this winter, so I'll see how that goes. Best of luck to you and I'd love to hear about your progress.

  11. Hi Dawn,
It's been quite awhile since you or anyone with a comment has posted. I just wanted to see how you are feeling now a couple years post-surgery? I've had chronic pain in my right shin (or feels like it's sometimes behind and deeper) for 1.5 years since I delivered my daughter with an epidural. A deep ache and tightness that is exacerbated by standing and any weight bearing exercises has been my daily complaint. This has confounded doctors and I have had MRIs, XRays that have come back "normal" with a few cortisone injections that have not really worked! I suspect CECS but my doctor doesn't have a great deal of confidence in that. What were your symptoms leading up to surgery and how do you feel now?

    Thanks!
